As of March, A survey by Gartner Inc. showed 88% percent of Global Organizations going remote amid Pandemic. While working remotely can potentially be highly productive, however, it can go downhill due to various reasonsemotional well being one among them.

With organizations going remote, most of us have been in remote working mode for quite some time now. As humans, we all respond to it in different ways.

It is fair to say we all have good days from getting to spend more time with family, self-care or simply not having to deal with traffic to having some not so great days when everything seems overwhelming and walls start to close in.

While there has been a lot of discussions among leaders and HR colleagues on how to set-up a remote working environment and how to manage work-life balance, emotional well being comes in great significance among other things.

Let’s see if we can cover few things off to keep ourselves sane enough to get through all the craziness happening around us lately.

1. Be Kind to Yourself

Let’s be real, it’s been tough for a couple of past few months, from dealing with work-life balance to adjusting to this new normal. It been interesting past few months, to say the least.

Don’t be hard on yourself, it’s alright if you are behind on your house chores or talk to your team and understand if they missed a deadline.

Don’t know where to start? Here are a few activities that focus on positive emotional well being; you can plan fun activities with your team as well

Be kind to yourself and others around you, especially now more than ever.

2. Be Flexible

While it is important to set up a work schedule in helping you balance your work life and keep you focused, make use of the flexibility that comes with working remotely now and then.

Take that extra hour of sleep on Monday or go for a short walk on your “extended” lunch break.

Breaking away from a schedule can be better than you think.

3. Me time

To all the people feeling guilty about taking some time for themselves because there is work pending to be done or people that need your time and attention, please do understand that you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Recent data from Glint indicates employee burnout has doubled from March to April, increasing from 2.7% to 5.4%.

Taking “Me time” out yourself becomes even more significant now than ever.

It is as important as getting chores done or to finish a pending task at work.

Mark your daily calendar if you have to, recharge before you burnout.

4. Get a Rant Buddy

As silly as it sounds, this is the best advice I got from my boss and I always tell that to my employees when discussing managing stress/frustrations in personal and professional life.

Internalizing negative emotions can have a significant impact on an individual’s emotional well being.

Robert W. Firestone, Ph.D., psychologist, and author in one of his blogs aptly discusses the inevitable consequences of suppressing negative emotions.

So, when things get tough, call someone you trust and can confide in and just rant your heart out.

P.S: It’s always nice to ask if the person listening has the mental capacity to absorb any rant.

5. Be Mindful

Be mindful of your thoughts and feelings, incorporate sanity checks in your “Me time” slots.

Negative thoughts and feelings can be easily all-consuming if left unchecked.

In the end, we are all human and each of us is trying our best to get through these tough times the best we can.

This “new normal” lifestyle is not a competition about who did it best, it’s about surviving the Pandemic, don’t be afraid or shy to seek help if you are struggling.
